In the world of locksmithing, there are a variety of tools and methods by which the professionals in the field apply their craft. Maybe one day they will unlock a stranded motorist’s car door on the side of a highway. Perhaps their call will take them to a residential area and they will have to repair, replace, or re-key one or more locks in a particular home. There could have been a break-in, in which case parts of a door might need replaced, along with all of the locks in the house. Perhaps the day’s duties will include appraising a business, determining the proper security measures and policies that they require. Once that is done, it is necessary to bring these measures to life by implementing safety procedures and security protocols. As you can see, locksmiths are not one-trick ponies by any means. Yes, they are well known for repairing and replacing locks, but there is so much more to it than that.

As well, the keys and locks that they work with every day are quite varied, with their composition being determined by the level of security they represent. Automation and mass-production have changed how the industry operates, as locksmiths no longer manufacture locks and keys by hand. However, that does not mean that all keys are built alike and it does not mean that all locks are the same either. There is an entire world of locks and keys available for all manners and levels of security. They range from simple yet effective to complicated to unsophisticated to something entirely intangible. Here is a look at some of the keys that can be found in the world today:

  • House keys also known as pin-tumbler keys, are by the far the most common type of key on the market. These keys feature a series of grooves cut into one side of the blade. Chances are you have a few of them in your pocket right now.
  • Automobile keys are, of course, those keys that allow you to gain access to your car or truck. They are usually symmetrical and grooves are cut in both sides of the blade.
  • Transponder keys emit a radio signal that communicates with the car’s computer and can unlock or activate the ignition of the vehicle. These keys are typically fobs with one or more buttons on them.
  • Master keys are an interesting technology. Say a series of locks can all be opened by unique keys, as is usual for commercial models. However, each lock has a second set of pins that can be opened by the same key, what we know as the “master key.”
