But you ultimately have three options: replace it yourself, take it to a dealership or take it to a locksmith. Let’s evaluate each of these three options for replacing the battery in your key fob.

Replacing Key Fob Batteries Yourself

You can tell your key fob battery needs to be replaced when it’s unresponsive, the range decreases, buttons don’t work or any button lights don’t turn on. Some key fobs also have “battery low” indicators in the vehicle’s dashboard. Whatever the case, it is possible to replace the key fob batteries yourself. Just make sure you do it quickly, however, as you don’t want to be locked out of your vehicle or stranded if the battery dies.

Replacing the key fob battery just involves a few steps:

1. Find the right battery, and purchase it. (It’s usually listed on the fob somewhere.)
2. Open the fob key using a small screwdriver or prying the halves apart.
3. Remove the old battery, and place the new one.
4. Close the fob and test the button.

If your key fob battery is already dead, you’ll need to access the mechanical key or a spare key. Some manufacturers or dealers also have a remote unlock app available.

Taking Your Key Fob to a Dealership

An easier option is to take the key fob to a dealership, as they can replace it for you. But this can also come with additional charges beyond the cost of the battery, and you may need to schedule an appointment. The dealer usually has to sell, and service vehicles of the same brand as yours, however, so keep that in mind. 

Using a Locksmith for Key Fob Battery Replacement

Another convenient option is to have a locksmith replace the battery. This is ideal when you’re already at the shop for another security need, and have a low key fob battery, but a locksmith can provide several other key fob-related services as well. This includes:

• Unlocking your vehicle if your key fob is dead, and you’re stranded.
• Providing a new key fob if yours is faulty, or an upgraded version.
• Creating a duplicate or spare mechanical key in the event your key fob or key fob battery dies again.
