It can be easy to forget that certain home services are beneficial for both condominiums, and apartments. Many of us think that these are only for people who own single-family residences. But this couldn’t be further from the truth for certain industries.

Take locksmithing, for example.

Multi-unit buildings often have more stringent security requirements than even single-tenant properties. Whether you own or rent a high-rise residential apartment or a space in a multi-story commercial building, here are some ways a locksmith can help give you peace of mind.

1. Rekeying Your Unit

If you own your unit, make sure you rekey it immediately upon moving in so that no one has access to it—whether it’s a past resident or, someone unknown. If you rent, you can check with your landlord to see if this has happened (and request it if not). Either way, a locksmith can work with you or the building owner to easily rekey your unit and give you peace of mind.

2. Adding Locks to Your Door or Window

Additional security is always welcome, especially for your front door or window, as these are two of the most common areas of an apartment or condo where people break in. While a more prevalent issue for spaces on the lower floors, it’s a wise idea regardless of your unit’s location. A locksmith can install an impact-resistant additional lock that can only be unlocked from the inside, for example, or increase the security of your windows via a locking bar or other mechanism.

3. Installing a Doorbell Camera

Adding a front door camera is another good security measure to take, whether you get frequent visitors or not. Opening the door to check who is there is a security mistake, but a camera will let you check first from the safety of your interior. While cameras used to be an issue with landlords due to old models that had to be drilled into the building, newer models aren’t as invasive, and more landlords are open to them.

4. Helping During an Emergency

If you’re locked out of your condo or apartment and building management or maintenance isn’t there, a locksmith can help. This is especially helpful during emergency situations, such as when a child is left alone inside or an elderly person has fallen. A professional locksmith can help you quickly access the unit again.

5. Repairing Locks or Locking Mechanisms

If the door, window or safe locks in your multi-unit property is compromised due to age, damage or another factor, a locksmith can help repair it. Again, if you rent, you might want to ask the landlord first (or make sure you’ll be compensated), but if you own, it makes sense to get these issues addressed right away.

These are just a few ways locksmiths can help with multi-unit properties like high-rise apartments, and condominiums. To learn more, and request a consultation or no-obligation quote, contact A-1 Locksmith today.

Business owners don’t have to create a desire to protect their assets. It’s at the core of who they are as the primary investor in a company. As such, nearly every business has some form of security, whether as robust as a monitored, and surveilled security system or as basic as locking doors.

However, when it comes to certain elements of security, owners may have questions. One of those is how often they should rekey their business. That’s the topic of today’s post.

Understanding Rekeying

Wait, rekeying? Is that even important? Before we get into the ideal frequency, you should first be aware of what rekeying entails. Basically, it involves the altering of internal components of a lock so that it can only be operated by a new key. This is different from replacing the entire lock mechanism and allows you to maintain existing hardware while upping your security level.

Factors Influencing Rekeying Frequency

Each business situation is different, with factors like location and employee turnover having a big impact on the ideal rekeying frequency. Here are a few of the most common factors that you should consider when it comes to rekeying frequency:

Employee turnover: does your business have an unusually high turnover rate? Many fast-food restaurants, and retail establishments fall into this category. If employees come, and go frequently at your business, you need to maintain control over who has access to your premises. Rekeying after a certain number of employees have moved on will ensure they can’t gain unauthorized entry to their former place of employment.

Lost or stolen keys: if an employee loses their key or if a key is stolen, this is another time when it’s ideal to rekey, as it poses a significant security risk. Even if the key is recovered, there’s no way to guarantee that it hasn’t been duplicated during the time it was missing.

Security breaches: having a location in an area of town with higher crime rates is another reason to rekey more consistently. This is especially true if your business has had security breaches in the past. It’s important to reassess your security measures regularly, and rekey often in these cases.

Routine maintenance: you might also notice the need for rekeying during regular maintenance inspections. Even if you don’t have high employee turnover, lost keys or security breaches, there should still be a consistent schedule for rekeying.

Recommended Rekeying Schedule

While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to how often you should rekey your business, a proactive approach to security is vital. Consider performing an annual assessment of your security protocols, and include proactive measures for whenever there are employee changes or security incidents. As a rule of thumb, we recommend you rekey your business at least once or twice a year to prevent unwanted security issues.

Again, the frequency of rekeying your business depends on varying factors such as employee turnover, security incidents, and routine maintenance. But if you stay proactive, and vigilant, you can ensure that your business remains secure, and protected. If you’re ready to have us assess your security situation or need for rekeying, contact A-1 Locksmith today.

Which type of safe is best for your business, and what's the difference between a deposit and cash safe? Let's cover both of these topics.

The world of safes is deceivingly complex. While a good number of people think there is only one type of safe, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. There are varying options when it comes to size, type, finish, features… the list goes on.

For today’s post, we’ll be focusing on which type of safe you should consider for your business—specifically, the differences between a deposit and cash safes. Read on to discover the benefits of these two options.

About Commercial Deposit Safes: A Secure Way to Handle Deposits

What is a deposit safe in the first place? Commercial deposit safes (aka “drop safes” or “deposit boxes”) are designed for businesses that handle a high volume of cash transactions. The primary function of a commercial deposit safe is to allow for secure deposits without requiring access to the safe’s main compartment. That’s why there are often deposit slots or chutes, which allow you to insert cash (or other valuable items) while keeping the main safe compartment locked, and secure. This not only increases efficiency, but reduces the risk of theft, both internally, and externally.

Cash Safes: Comprehensive Protection for Valuables

Cash safes, on the other hand, are designed for businesses that require secure storage for a variety of valuable items. This could include cash or deposits, of course, but also applies to important documents, and even small valuables. Some key features of cash safes include advanced locking mechanisms, fireproofing, and tamper-resistant construction to protect your valuables from theft, fire, and other potential threats. This added peace of mind is invaluable when compared to the vulnerability that comes with leaving valuables unprotected.

Choosing the Right Safe for Your Business

Ultimately, the choice between a commercial deposit safe, and a cash safe depends on your business’s specific security requirements. That’s why a consultation with a safe expert at a company like A-1 Locksmith is so valuable. In general, however, if you primarily need a secure method for handling daily deposits, a commercial deposit safe may be the right choice. But if you require comprehensive asset protection and ample storage space, a cash safe is likely the better option.

At A-1 Locksmith in Dallas-Fort Worth, we understand that every business has unique security needs. Our experts can help you determine which safe is right for your needs. Contact us today!

Some people learn things the hard way. Then there are those who prefer to learn from others’ mistakes. This applies to everything from selling a car to interviewing for a job.

Security is no exception.

For example, there’s a right way, and a wrong way to move a bulky item like a home safe. If you’re considering a DIY safe move, here are some techniques to avoid at all cost.

Underestimating the Weight

Safes are heavy, and can weigh several hundred pounds or more. People often underestimate the weight of the safe, and end up straining their backs (or injuring themselves in another way) during the move. Be sure to consult with a safe professional to determine how much help you’ll need. Moving a safe is a two-person job, at the very least. But the more people you have to move it, the less you’ll risk injury or damaging the safe.

Choosing the Wrong Equipment

Another common mistake is not choosing proper equipment. Consider a heavy-duty dolly, straps or a hoist. If you don’t have any of these tools, it might be best to consider hiring a professional to move, and install your safe, as they will usually have the necessary equipment to do their job. Not using the right equipment can make the move much more difficult (and also risk injury or damage to your home, business or the safe itself).

Not Planning the Route

“Measure twice, cut once” is a common saying. It’s important to prepare for a big safe move, which includes measuring the safe itself and the route where you’ll transport it. Make sure there is enough clearance where you’re putting it and remove any obstacles along the way. Pay special attention to stairs, narrow hallways, and doorways, as these are parts of the route that typically cause issues. The more you plan, the less you risk having to move the safe multiple times or failing to even reach your desired location for the safe.

Not Securing the Safe Properly

It’s important to secure the safe properly, both during the move, and after it’s placed in your desired location. For the relocation, you want to ensure it doesn’t fall off the equipment you’re using. For the placement, you want to ensure it’s mounted properly so it doesn’t tip over (especially if it’s in an area that children access). A professional locksmith or safe technician can give you additional guidance on how to best secure the safe you’re moving.

While knowing these four mistakes to avoid while moving a safe yourself is important, this list is not limited to these, and there’s also the value you’d receive by working with a company that already has all the equipment, knowledge, and staff to handle your safe move. Maybe you have a low-bed trailer ideal for moving the safe, and you’re prepared to bolt your safe down. Now couple in your own labor and likely the labor of a friend, and you can easily see where the value proposition is of working with a safe-moving company even if you’re able to avoid these common mistakes when moving a safe yourself.

For the best locksmithing and safe services in Dallas-Fort Worth, trust A-1 Locksmith.

In today’s world of instant gratification, it’s tempting to call a professional every time something in your house needs to be fixed. While we love helping customers with safe purchases, and repairs, you don’t have to call a professional locksmith or safe company every time you experience an issue with your home safe.

If you do identify an issue, you’ll know how to approach next steps, and if a DIY repair is feasible. But you might need to call a pro anyway. Before you do, here are four common trouble areas to check:

Coding Issue

If your safe is in a commercial environment, there’s a chance the owner has codes he or she can give to certain people to access the safe. When this happens, the code can be accidentally deactivated or changed. A good way to know whether there is a coding issue is to have someone with another code (preferably the business owner) try to access the safe. If they can, there’s likely an issue with your code. If they can’t, there might be a bigger problem.

Battery Life

Another simple issue—akin to turning a computer on and off again to reset it—is when the safe battery dies. Many safes these days use batteries to operate the keypad, unlock the safe, and other functions. Replacing the batteries is an obvious way to test whether this is the problem, but other signs that can tip you off include a display that isn’t working, or a display that still lights up while the safe won’t open. If you replace the batteries, and there’s still a problem, it might be time to call a professional.

Security Features

Many safes these days have advanced security features that let you do everything from access the safe with a fingerprint to lock down in case of too many failed access attempts. The latter can happen if you use the wrong code a few times, in which case you simply need to wait a while before trying to access it again (give it at least 30 minutes to be sure). It’s also possible you may be entering the wrong code, so ensure that is correct as well before calling a professional.

Electronics / Wiring

Finally, there could be wiring issues messing with the safe’s electronics. The wires in your safe are like wires in other electronics in that they can wear down or become damaged/dead over time. If you do diagnose this is your issue, it’s almost always a necessity to call a professional locksmith to open it again, and give you access to your safe. A locksmith can also help you diagnose the issue to begin with if you’re wanting to streamline to a solution.

Whether you need a safe repair or are interested in a new safe purchase, A-1 Locksmith is ready to serve. Give us a call or start shopping online today.

In today’s world where many products have a confusing amount of companion products, there are certain accessories that actually help people use a product more effectively. Then there are accessories that aren’t necessary to the original product fulfilling its purpose.

How do you know which is which?

When it comes to safes at least, we can help. If you own a home safe (especially one you’re using for firearm storage), you should know which accessories are necessary, and which you can do without. Let’s go over the safe accessories you should prioritize on your wish list.

Dehumidifiers

Probably the No. 1 must-have accessory if you’re storing a firearm, dehumidifiers keep condensation from settling (and usually rusting) on metal. This maintains the life of whatever metal item you’re storing, ensuring your firearm functions as well when you pull it out of the gun safe as it did before you stored it in the safe. There are dehumidifiers available in several sizes, and styles (e.g. desiccants, rods, rechargeables, etc.), so choose one that fits your space, maintenance, and usage needs.

Interior Lights

Safes are dark by design. To see corners, and the back of your safe, a lighting kit may be in order. Especially beneficial at night, interior lighting can be combined with mirrors to help you see every area of the safe. You can go with one that a manufacturer specifically designed for your model, or go with a universal option.

Exterior Lights

In addition to lights inside the safe, consider lights outside the safe. You want to be able to quickly access your safe at night, so if it’s under your bed or in the closet corner, make sure you have proper illumination (motion-tracking is a smart choice here). At the very least, ensure you can see the lock or combination pad if yours is not illuminated.

Organizers

Perhaps you have accessories or ammunition for your firearms. Or, you own multiple firearms, and other valuables. An organizer can help you keep things nice, tidy, and accessible in your safe. There are handgun hangers, door panel organizers, rifle organization compartments, drawers, and more.

Mounting Kit

While we’re adding this to the accessory list, if you don’t want the potential of your safe walking off then a mounting kit should rather be thought of as part of the cost of the safe. There are two big benefits to mounting or anchor kits: 1, they keep the safe from tipping over; and 2, they make the safe more difficult to steal. A mounting kit also lets you secure, and store the safe by fastening to a wall or ceiling – you have more options than just bolting to the ground.

If you’re interested in a home safe or safe accessory, browse our online shop today or stop by one of our DFW-area locations, and we’ll answer any questions you may have.

Keypads are great entry options for home safes, as they’re more convenient and technologically advanced than traditional entry methods. The main question is, what happens when the battery dies? Do you have to call a professional? Does a magic safe fairy come, and deliver a new one under your pillow at night? Can you change a safe keypad battery yourself?

Let’s walk through the steps typically associated with a keypad battery change to help you decide whether it’s worth a DIY attempt or if it’s time to call a professional locksmith.

(Note: these instructions are based on the SECURAM ProLogic series of keypads.)

Step #1: Find the Battery Compartment

Top-lit, back-lit and LCD screen keypads are usually pretty easy to find where to change the battery. It’s often found at about the 5 O’clock position, though you can work your way around the keypad to find it if it’s not there.

Step #2: Remove the Compartment

There should be a lever that you can pull to slide out the battery compartment. It comes out pretty easily, and often features a D-cell battery.

Step #3: Replace the Battery

This is pretty straightforward, with no special batteries required or anything. Just buy a pack of D Cells, and use one of them for the keypad. Discard the old battery.

Step #4: Replace the Compartment

Slide the compartment back into the slot the same way it came out. (Again, this should be around the 5 o’clock position.) Make sure the battery, and compartment are both in the right way, or either could get stuck. Once it’s in, you’re done with your keypad battery change!

Step #5: Verify the Battery Level

If your keypad features an LCD screen, you’ll be able to check the battery level with a quick glance at the top-right corner. It displays your battery life similar to the way your phone does.

Finding the Best Safe Accessories

Why are professionals so good at what they do? Well, because they’re professionals – in other words, they’re good enough at a field to charge for it. This creates a dynamic in that a business simply being open is one good indicator that they are good at what they do. Same dynamic with a professional still being employed.

If you’re not a professional, however, you should think twice before you tackle something outside your area of expertise. Home safe delivery is one such area.

We often get asked how we deliver big, bulky safes in hard-to-reach locations. In this post and video, we take a look at a 650-pound Liberty Franklin Model Safe we successfully delivered to a customer who wanted it on the second floor.

Watch the video, and/or read about it below.

Key Components for Safe Delivery

When it comes to home safe delivery, there are a few best practices to consider, whether you’re doing it yourself (with help) or hiring a professional. Here are some of the key components for home safe delivery:

Reachable location: the safe has to fit in the space, and the path to the space.

Proper weight: the space needs to support the 50-500+ pounds of the safe.

Experience: whoever is moving it needs to know what they’re doing.

Multiple people: bigger safes especially shouldn’t be moved alone, even with a dolly.

Mitigated risk: whether it’s for personal injury or property damage.

Is Delivery or Pickup the Best Option?

The two main factors with this decision are: the size of the safe, and the difficulty in delivery. As for the size of the home safe, many people can handle 100 pounds or less with a dolly (assuming no or few obstacles). Anything more than that requires two people, and some practical knowledge. So if you’re confident in both of those departments, picking up your safe yourself might be the best option.

If the safe is approaching 200 or 300 pounds (or more), it might require professional equipment and experience. The difficulty of reaching where you want the safe delivered might also require an expert’s strategy, whether it’s up stairs, around corners or past obstacles. (Though be aware an extra fee may be charged for difficult delivery situations like this.)

How A-1 Safe Delivery Works

At A-1 Locksmith Security, and Safes, we pride ourselves in professional, efficient and safe home delivery for our safe options. This includes hiring and training professional team members, using advanced equipment and providing extra security with ropes, and/or cords. Finally, we are insured, and bonded to provide even more peace of mind.

Do you need to store firearms in gun safes, or are home safes an appropriate option as well? We’ll help you decide.

Many of us became first-time gun owners in the past year or two. With this comes a lot of responsibility, safety awareness, and expectations. But it also comes with a lot of questions, from how to clean and use the gun to the best options for storing it.

We’ll be discussing the latter today. Do you need to store firearms in gun safes, or are home safes an appropriate option as well? We’ll help you decide.

Gun Safe, and Home Safe Differences

First off, how are these safes even different? They look the same on the outside to the average person and the features, and capabilities of each are similar. (You could argue that the main difference between gun safes, and home safes lies in the items you’re storing inside them.) That being said, there are some key differences when it comes to protecting firearms. For example, here are the advantages you’ll find in most gun safes:

Humidity, and water damage protection

Industry-required door seals

Gun-friendly storage racks, and shelves

Then again, many home safes feature flexible storage options, and sealed openings as well. You can also add a dehumidifier to your safe, making it a better option for firearms, and accessories.

Which Is Better?

Gun safes, and home safes both can offer thick walls of protection, advanced fire safety ratings, and other features that help protect against theft or damage. Your choice really depends on how you plan to use it. Will you be storing other valuables in addition to firearms? How big are your firearms? Do you need to access the gun quickly or do you have a long-term storage plan?

Whatever you decide, you’ll need to make sure the safe can eliminate moisture, and humidity, as this leads to rust, one of the biggest culprits for firearm damage. Keep firearms secured tightly in the safe, and get the safe serviced annually. (Home safes typically aren’t serviced as often as gun safes, but you can definitely request bi-annual or annual tune-ups.)
