Figuring out how to change a safe combination can be tricky if you don’t have the owner’s manual. This is especially true if you’re talking about keypad combinations or safes featuring advanced technology.

Never fear, we’re here to help you out.

Let’s go over the basic rules for setting a new safe combination, using a Liberty Safe SecuRam Backlit Combo Change safe as an example.

(Prefer to watch a video? We have you covered here as well.)

Rule #1: Always Leave the Door Open While Reconfiguring the Combination…

…and turn the handle so it’s locked and you don’t accidentally close and lock the door without the combination! If that happens, you’ll likely have to drill into the safe or call a professional locksmith to help you out. So when you first open the safe (if applicable), make sure to turn the handle and extend the lock bars so it’s “locked” in the open position. If your safe doesn’t have this capability, put a towel or something in between the door and the frame to keep it open.

Rule #2: Follow the Proper Sequences

You can count on many of the same procedures and processes for safes and resetting safe combinations, especially if you’re dealing with the same manufacturer. That being said, resetting the keypad can vary slightly. The good news is that there are online user’s manuals and instructions or videos from fellow customers.

Today, we’ll be using the SecuRam Backlit Combo Change safe from Liberty Safe as an example. Here’s how to reset the keypad combination for this safe:

  1. Enter the program mode code (0 six times, or 000000)
  2. Enter the six-digit existing combination
  3. Enter the new six-digit combination
  4. Enter the new combination again

You should hear audible notifications to let you know it was successful. But the code should now be reset successfully.

Rule #3: Call A Professional If You Get Stuck

Of course, certain situations require the attention of a professional. If your safe is locked shut and you don’t know the combination, this is the most common scenario when you’d want to call a professional locksmith. Other situations, such as doors that are rusted shut and keys that won’t work, can also benefit from a professional’s eye. If you’re unable to change the combination for your safe, call our team today and we’ll be happy to help you out.
