A-1 Locksmith is one of the foremost family-owned, and operated locksmiths in America and the oldest locksmith company still active in DFW. We have been on the job since 1949. After decades of success, it’s safe to say that we have seen and done it all when it comes to locksmithing. So, what is the secret to becoming a good locksmith?

Locksmithing 101

Becoming a well-reputed locksmith means committing to your craft. Education, training and hands-on experience are all critical to the cause. One must understand the full gamut of security systems as well as mechanical, and electronic locking mechanisms. Beyond technical expertise, an aspiring locksmith must consider the customer-service responsibilities of the job. Instilling confidence, and trust in the customers you service daily is just as valuable as the work you perform.

Locksmithing is one of the oldest professions, and has been imperative to local communities for centuries. To excel, you need to know how you can best serve your community as a locksmith. Knowing your community means knowing state, and local regulations for locksmithing. These requirements can vary by location so it is essential that you are fully aware of what is required before committing to the industry. You need to be familiar with state-wide licensing as a locksmith license is required in many states and may involve a criminal background check. Certain states may also enforce minimum age requirements.

Get First-Hand Experience via an Apprenticeship

As mentioned, hands-on training is essential. This is especially true in the realm of locksmithing. That’s why we believe that obtaining an apprenticeship is essential.

A locksmith apprentice generally trains alongside a licensed professional. This allows the apprentice to fully understand the ups, and downs of the trade. An apprenticeship can last just a few months or it can go on for more than a year. The time committed is dependent on what is being taught and how well those lessons are being received.

Master Your Craft

It’s important to keep up with industry trends, and emerging technologies. When A-1 Locksmith began, lock technology concerning cars, homes, and businesses looked far different than it does today. As locksmithing technology continues to evolve it’s important to continue your ongoing education and this is not limited to staying current with your license.

One must also know how to use specialized tools when it comes to locksmithing. Locks, true to the profession’s namesake, are a big part of the business but in today’s world those locks can be attached to a very advanced security system. This is where knowledge of your craft and attention to detail come in handy. Even minor mistakes can cause serious issues with the functionality of a lock or security system.

Certifications Matter

Like any business, your success depends on your reputation. Potential clients rely on dependability, and quality workmanship, and that’s something you must commit to every day of the job to retain a positive reputation.

So, if you want to stand out in the marketplace as a local locksmith consider backing up your professional reputation with proper certification training. The ALOA (Associated Locksmiths of America) is a great place to start. They offer a variety of certifications, and ongoing education.

Be True to Your Craft

Your potential clients will have the same expectations of you that you have of your contractors: dependable work at a reasonable price. Combine this with a sterling reputation for getting the job done right the first time, and you, too, could have a decades-long career as a reputable locksmith.

If you think you have what it takes to become a locksmith or are otherwise experienced in locksmith, A-1 Locksmith would love to hear from you. Check out our open locksmith positions here and apply today.

A homeowner’s worst nightmare in North Texas is the air condition failing, right? Well, maybe in the heat of a hot summer afternoon. However, from a cost perspective, foundation movement is what keeps homeowners up at night. Alas, for all the climate spoils North Texans enjoy, we do have to contend with high heat and common foundation movement. The latter can be extremely costly when severe, and can be extremely bothersome in any situation. For this post, we focus on the effects of foundation movement in North Texas, and how a locksmith can help.

The Effects of Foundation Movement in Your Home or Business

Foundation movement in North Texas is most often the result of the expansive clay soil that permeates the regional landscape. Most often these seismic shifts are minor and cause only cosmetic damage. However, the effects over time can become more bothersome.

Foundation issues are often noted by way of cracks in walls, and ceilings. As the foundation of a building or home shifts, these cracks appear. They might be particularly notable around doorways.

You may also note cracks around windows. As a result, windows might not close or lock properly. This is generally the result of a larger shift as doors, and windows become misaligned.

If you’re seeing the other signs, you will likely notice cracks in the flooring. Over time cracks can lead to gaps. Foundation movement doesn’t always result in gaps but if you see cracks forming on your floor or around baseboards then you may presume that this is an effect of foundation movement.

These effects are generally cumulative. If you see cracks in the floor they typically lead to or result in cracks in a nearby wall. Over time this can create issues with doorways, and windows… and that’s where a North Texas locksmith can help.

How Can a Locksmith Help with the Effects of Foundation Movement?

While foundation damage generally affects a building’s structure, and sometimes calls for the attention of foundation experts, a qualified locksmith can help in a number of ways. Remember, there are a number of consequences that arise because of routine foundation movement and while we might not be able to assist with larger concerns, a locksmith can help with some aftereffects of a shifting foundation.

Door and Lock Alignment

Aside from obvious concerns about structural damage, securing your home or business is essential. Your ability to properly lock or even align a door might become a problem if there is considerable movement in your foundation. Here at A-1 Locksmith Security & Safes we are happy to lend a hand if this is an issue on your property.

A qualified locksmith will be able to adjust and/or realign your doorknobs, and hardware so that your doors can be secured, and properly locked. When your home or business is damaged because of foundation movement, peace of mind should be first on your list of things to acquire. A secured property is paramount.

We can also assist with replacing damaged locks. A misaligned door can lead to wear and tear on a lock and the strike plates associated with that lock. If your lock has suffered damage for any reason, just give our team of experts a quick call, and we will make it right.

If the foundation movement has caused considerable damage, and you need to temporarily evacuate the home or business for repairs, we can help you to rekey the locks on your property. You might wish to do this to ensure no one will have access to the property in question except those who are authorized to be there.

Window Locks, and Adjustments

Another entry point of concern will be your windows. Do your windows close properly or are they difficult to close? Will they latch or lock in place? If your windows are misaligned due to foundation movement we can help. A properly trained locksmith knows how to replace your window locks, and make sure that your windows can latch. This is also essential to securing your home from unauthorized entry.

What About Security Systems that are Affected by Foundation Movement?

These days, advanced security systems rely on secured entry, and exit points in your home or business. If a door or window cannot properly close, this may trigger issues with your security hardware. A qualified locksmith knows how to make sure that your property is able to comply with the requirements of a home or business security system.

We can also help you install a proper keypad or smart lock. This means that you would no longer need to rely solely on a hard key system. Smart locks can also notify you when codes are used or a false code/entry is attempted. When properly tied into a home or business security system smart locks, and keypads are a reliable way of truly securing a home or business.

Foundation Movement in North Texas is Not Just About Foundation Repair

Home, and business owners shudder at the words “foundation repair.” It sounds expensive, and it sounds like there’s no way out. However, foundation issues such as misalignment can offer a quick and temporary band-aid of sorts.

A lot of homes have small, simple foundation issues that likely won’t amount to structural damage. However, North Texas has its fill of foundation movement because of its clay soil. This means that foundation issues can slowly develop, and become a problem down the road.

Keep an eye out for cracks in flooring tiles. See if they lead to cracks in a wall or near an entry or exit point. Doorways, and windows are where one will often find signs of potential foundation issues.

If your doors, and windows are misaligned or will not secure because of foundation movement, give A-1 Locksmith in North Texas a call. Our locksmithing experts know how to deal with misalignment. The first step you need to take when faced with potential foundation issues is to make sure you are able to properly secure your home or business.

Imagine your car breaking down in the middle of a deserted road late at night. In that moment of stress, and urgency, you wouldn’t want to be scrambling to find a reliable mechanic, would you? Having a reliable mechanic’s number saved would give you a lot more peace of mind in the moment.

Similarly, you don’t want to have to find an emergency locksmith in the middle of an actual emergency. Having a good one top-of-mind is a great way to eliminate the risk of having to depend on a potentially unreliable or unscrupulous locksmith in a pinch.

In light of this, let’s explore some reasons why you should find an emergency locksmith before one is actually needed.

You Avoid Scams

Emergency situations can cloud your judgment, which might make you more vulnerable to locksmith scams or unreliable services that overcharge you or provide subpar work. By researching and selecting a trustworthy locksmith in advance, you avoid panic-driven decisions.

There’s a Quicker Response

Instead of wasting time searching for locksmiths near you who are available to help, you can quickly call one you know. This is especially beneficial when it’s late at night, during a storm or right before an important meeting. Having an emergency locksmith on standby ensures that you get back on track quickly.

You Know Availability Better

Not all locksmiths are available 24/7, nor do all specialize in emergency situations. Again, this can delay finding the right one when timing is critical. But researching in advance will let you know who offers round-the-clock services, and has experience handling emergencies.

Costs Are More Predictable

While emergency services tend to cost a little more than standard services, you don’t want to pay overly inflated prices. In addition to researching locksmiths, also research standard pricing and be sure to discuss pricing upfront with the locksmith you choose. You don’t want to worry about hidden fees or surprise charges when you’re already stressed.

You Have Someone You Trust

Finding an emergency locksmith ahead of time also gives you time to build a relationship, and test their services on less-timely tasks, such as key duplication or lock maintenance. This helps you verify that they are reliable, professional, and affordable. Ultimately, you want someone you can count on when it’s an emergency.

A-1 Locksmith is proud to offer, some of the best emergency locksmith services you’ll find in Texas.

Like many modern technologies, and practices around today, you might not think locksmithing has a long history. But you’d be surprised at how far back the locksmithing trade goes. From the rudimentary mechanisms of ancient Egypt to the sophisticated systems of the digital age, locksmithing has evolved throughout its history.

When did the locksmithing industry get started? How has it evolved? What services can locksmiths provide today? We answer all these questions (and more) in today’s post exploring the history of locksmithing.

Ancient Beginnings

Locksmithing has been around since people saw the need to protect valuables. This is why the origins of locksmithing can be traced back to ancient civilizations. Egyptian locks, for example, date back to 4,000 years ago and consisted of simple wooden mechanisms, often operated with bulky wooden keys. These early contraptions weren’t the most secure devices in the world, but paved the way for the fundamental principles of locks, and keys.

The Medieval Era

Locksmithing flourished during the Middle Ages in Europe. This is when security craftsmen became known as locksmiths, honing their skills, and creating intricate designs, and mechanisms. Innovations like the ward lock, a precursor to modern pin tumbler locks, emerged during this era, showcasing a leap in lock technology.

Industrial Revolution and Modern Era

The Industrial Revolution heralded a new chapter in locksmithing. Advancements in metallurgy, and machinery transformed the craft, enabling mass production of locks, and keys. Pioneering locksmiths developed complex systems, laying the groundwork for the sophisticated security systems we rely on today. But the Industrial Revolution is when locksmithing truly began to be more widespread, and accepted in society.

Embracing the Digital Age

As technology continues to evolve, so does the field of locksmithing. A-1 Locksmith embraces the digital era with enthusiasm, offering smart lock installations, biometric access systems, and digital security solutions that integrate seamlessly into modern lifestyles. Whatever your locksmithing- or security-related need, we can handle it.

The Future of Locksmithing

Looking ahead, locksmithing is poised to undergo further transformation. With advancements in biometrics, artificial intelligence, and interconnected systems, the future promises even more sophisticated, and adaptable security measures. And A-1 Locksmith will be here for it every step of the way.

From checking or opening any safes to installing new security measures afterwards, here are some instances after a house fire when it makes sense to call a locksmith (after the fire department has deemed it safe to re-enter, of course).

To Retrieve Valuables

At A-1 Locksmith, we’ve encountered situations where our customers experienced a house fire, and were unable to open the safes they had on the property. If you have a high-quality safe (like Liberty or Browning), it will likely stand up to intense fires, but you still might need help accessing it. When you have a house fire, a locksmith can determine if and when it’s safe to try, and open the safe again, as well as help actually open it (if, say, the combination/keys were lost or the LED screen melted, for example).

To Access Your Property

Fires can damage door locks. When that happens, you need to either repair or replace the locks. But first, you have to actually gain access to the entry point where the lock was located. A locksmith can potentially open the door and take out the lock, even if you don’t have the key (or the key no longer fits).

To Secure Your Property

Homes that have recently experienced a fire are vulnerable to looting and additional damage. A locksmith can assess the security of your home, and recommend any necessary repairs or upgrades, from the door locks, and window hardware to new security systems, and keys.

To Upgrade Your Security

Even if you don’t have any immediate needs, a professional locksmith can help you identify possible security upgrades to consider moving forward. Some solutions (like security systems) can even help you identify fires while they’re still small, reducing potential damage. Other examples of security upgrades include replacing old or outdated locks with smart or high-security locks, and replacing burned keys with high-tech duplications. A locksmith can assess your situation and provide more specific examples on site. “When to call a locksmith after a house fire” might not be the first question to come to your mind in such an emergency situation, but a locksmith, in addition to your local emergency services, is an ally for you during these tough times.

For a locksmith you can trust in emergency situations like house fires, call A-1 Locksmith or visit any of our DFW-area locations today.

Some people love New Year’s Resolutions. Others make it a resolution to not make any resolutions. (But isn’t that a resolution in itself?)

Regardless of which camp you fall into, it’s not too late to improve yourself or set some goals for improving in the upcoming year. Security is one area many people don’t think about, but peace of mind is something you can’t replace. Since this area is our specialty, here are five security-related New Year’s Resolutions to consider.

Avoid Getting Locked Out of Your Car or Locked Out of Your Home

We humans can be forgetful people. Whether it’s your house keys or your car keys, it just takes one mistake to cause an unfortunate, stressful, and potentially dangerous situation. Fortunately, there are several ways to ensure that you are never locked out of your home, car or business.

Here are a few ideas to help with this resolution:

Get a duplicate key made, and keep with a trusted friend or family member.

Upgrade to smart locks that let you use a combination or code to access.

Buy a wireless key fob that won’t lock inside a car.

Set up reminders for when you leave to include a reminder about keys.

Create an Emergency Plan

Another low-hanging fruit in the world of resolutions, an emergency plan can give you peace of mind about your loved ones, and employees in the event of an incident. Consider creating an emergency plan for fires, thefts, shootings, and other adverse situations. Document that plan and go through training with your family or employees to ensure everyone knows what to do.

Security Monitoring

If you don’t have a security system or video doorbell, a new year is a great time to invest in one. Security monitoring is becoming more, and more affordable while packing on new features. It’s never been easier to monitor your home or business when you’re on the road or out of town.

Find a Locksmith You Trust

Many people search for “locksmith near me” without knowing who is reliable, and who’s not in an industry that’s known for having its share of fraudulent operators. Having a professional local locksmith that you trust is an easy security-related resolution. Just as you have numbers for doctors, plumbers, and electricians, a “best” locksmith number should be easily accessible. At A-1 Locksmith, we guarantee our customer satisfaction and will do our best to ensure we’re your ideal security partner.

Upgrade Your Security System!

If you’re already set with the different types of security solutions that make sense for your home, business or vehicle, an upgrade might be all you need. There are likely better or newer versions of every piece of security equipment you own, so at least look into your options.

If you’re looking to improve the security of your home, vehicle or business, contact A-1 Locksmith or visit any of our Dallas-Fort Worth locations today.

You can’t improve what you don’t measure. Just ask any pastry chef how many recipes they went through before perfecting the final version of their favorite dessert! To identify areas of improvement, one must test.

It doesn’t matter if you’re talking about baking or commercial security. For the latter, it can be difficult to tell what is adequate, and what isn’t. In today’s article, we cover a few commonly overlooked areas in a typical security audit and how to determine whether your facility would pass a commercial security inspection or not.

Entry Points

First and foremost, make sure any entry, and exit points are covered. This is where thieves will check first and they love it when you make things easy for them. Make sure all doors close, and lock properly, but also check other elements of your doors are in working order, such as hinges, frames, and even the door material itself. The solution that provides the most peace of mind for commercial businesses, however, is a master key system where you control access to every room in your facility (including who has control of what area).

Windows

Next, something typically close to entry points: windows. Making sure your windows close, and lock properly is another item that should be on your commercial security checklist, as well as checking the hinges, and overall stability. Do all of your windows have screens? This is important whether the window is broken intentionally or not. There are other security upgrades you can place on your window, from commercial security systems with night visibility to motion tracking.

Storage Spaces

If your business has a warehouse, storage area, attic or basement, these are all areas that could attract criminals due to the fact they’re:

Typically out of sight or with poor lighting

Where the safe, and valuables are commonly stored

In areas with minimal foot traffic and customers

Not well maintained, and prone to excess wear/compromise

Basically, if there’s an area you don’t think about often (or at all), it’s a good idea to do a security check and make sure it isn’t the most vulnerable area of your facility.

Any Poorly Lit Area

Finally, do a sweep to make sure you have proper lighting, as any area in your commercial facility can be a security risk if it hides illegal activity. (Especially if said area is visible from the storefront or street.) Stairwells, clutter, boxes, and anything that causes a shadow is a vulnerable area to check, as are bathrooms, and any room with a public access point. At the end of the day, if you’re doing a regular audit or walkthrough, it will be easier to identify potential issues.

If you’d like to get professional feedback on your business security, contact A-1 Locksmith today at 972-284-7500.

Author Maya Angelou has been quoted as having the following perspective: “Hoping for the best, prepared for the worst and unsurprised by anything in between.” This can apply to multiple areas of our professional, and home lives, including security.

No one likes being locked out of their home, business or vehicle, but it happens more often than you might think. And you have to be prepared if you want to handle it properly (or avoid it happening to you in the first place).

Avoiding Residential Lockouts

Getting locked out of your own home is a frustrating experience. It may seem like an uncommon occurrence based on how much time people spend at home, and their resulting familiarity with their home locks. You would think this familiarity would help mitigate locking oneself out of their own home! But people manage, so you’re not alone if it happens to you. Here are some tips for avoiding residential lockouts:

Invest in keyless technology: there are locks today that you can open using just a combination or other device instead of an easy-to-lose key.

Keep a smart spare: you can have a spare key ready for these situations, just make sure you’re smart with where you hide it and who knows of its existence.

Hang up a lock box: a hybrid solution between a key, and combination, if you hide one of these, you can have peace of mind knowing only you have the code to access it.

Avoiding Automotive Lockouts

While home lockouts may be one of the most frustrating lockout experiences, automotive lockouts can be one of the scariest. After all, you’re often away from home, and can be in a potentially unsafe situation or unfamiliar part of town (or the country). Here are some tips for avoiding automotive lockouts:

Upgrade your locks: you have fingerprint, combo or digital entry options.

Get new keys: if you still have a standard key, upgrading to a fob or proximity key might be a wise investment. (Especially modern models that don’t lock inside the vehicle.)

Never lay keys down while on the go: always make a point to put them in something, like a pocket, purse or keep them in your hand.

Avoiding Commercial Lockouts

Lastly, getting locked out of a business isn’t uncommon. Just one instance of this can impact the peace of mind of both employees, and customers. Here are some tip for avoiding commercial lockouts:

Get a master key system: upgrade your entire security situation and control who has access to what areas of your facility.

Perform a security audit: call a professional locksmith and have them do an inspection to see if there are any issues that could leave you more prone to a lockout.

Have a spare key created: the simplest approach is to have a spare key made, and give it to the person who is second in charge.

If you have any security questions or are interested in upgrading the security of your home, vehicle or business, stop by any of our Dallas-Fort Worth A-1 Locksmith locations today.

Technology. It can make our lives easier while at the same time drive us insane when it doesn’t work properly. And no piece of technology is more prevalent in our lives than the smartphone. In fact, 83 percent of the population uses smartphones!

This can be a good thing and a bad thing when it comes to security. Let’s go over, some ways to use your smartphone to your benefit and some tips to keep in mind for your smartphone, and safety awareness.

How Phones Can Be Beneficial for Security

Your phone can be one of the most important tools for security in a pinch. After all, calling 911 is the first thing you should do if there is an emergency situation or anyone is in danger. But calling isn’t the only way phones can provide protection at home, on the go and at the office. Here are a few ways phones can be beneficial for safety, and security:

At home: technology has opened up a world of possibilities for your phone, and home security. With access to an app, you can open or close your garage door, control the temperature, and check in on security cameras remotely. Just a few taps, and you can usually accomplish what you need to, even if you’re on vacation or a business trip.

At the office: If you’re a business owner, a phone can be your master key for accessing doors, and certain areas of your business (or simply monitoring them). Just as it does at home, a smartphone gives you more control over (and access to) your business.

On the go: Sometimes, you can’t call 911 in an emergency. But your phone likely has an SOS-type app or way to communicate with emergency personnel without typing in the phone number. It would be wise to install one of these apps when there isn’t an emergency, so you have it ready if you have an automotive-related incident.

How Phones Can Be Harmful for Security

Phones can also work against you when it comes to your safety, and security. For starters, phones have sensitive information that can be compromised physically or wirelessly. Be careful about the emails you engage with and the social media posts or websites you engage with, and these can be ways for hackers to steal important info. Always keep a lock on your screen if you’re out in public and keep a password activated at all times. You should even be careful about who can see your screen when you’re using it. Avoiding using sensitive apps like banking apps in public is another wise decision.

Locksmiths, and Security

If you’re concerned about home, business or automobile security, a locksmith can help. Maybe the best solution is installing a smart security system you can access with your phone. Or, it might be upgrading the locks in your facility. Whatever route you take, a security expert like a locksmith can provide exceptional advice you wouldn’t get on your own.

If you have any security questions for your phone, home, automobile or business, call us at (972) 284-7500 today, and we’ll be happy to help you out.
